"Read This Before Buying Antique Furniture: A Cautionary, Eerie Tale" - Part 1

Our journey in the furniture business has been filled with unique experiences, but none quite as unforgettable as the story I’m about to share. It’s a tale that has lingered with me since the early 2000s, serving as a constant reminder of why we emphasize transparency about the origins of our furniture.

It was during a sale at our store, around year 2003, when a couple walked in with their son and they were looking to furnish their entire home. As our store name, Nosttaalgia, suggests, we specialize in furniture that evokes the charm of bygone eras—new pieces designed to look old or styled in a vintage manner. This couple, however, seemed unusually fixated on one question: “Is this furniture actual antique?”

Over and over, they asked, and each time, I reassured them that all our items were newly made, though crafted with an old-world appeal. Curiosity eventually got the best of me, and I asked why they were so concerned about the furniture being antique.

The wife’s response left me chilled to the bone.

She explained that they had recently purchased a whole set of vintage, antique furniture from a man selling it at an unbelievably low price. The furniture was beautiful and robust, seemed like a steal—or so they thought. They bought it without much thought.

But soon after bringing the furniture into their home, strange things began to happen.

The first sign was subtle but unsettling. The husband, while sleeping alone, would feel some movement next to him, as if someone was tossing and turning beside him. It was as if an unseen presence was sharing the bed. At first, he tried to brush it off as his imagination, but the sensation grew stronger over time—enough to wake him in the dead of night, sweating and uneasy.

Then, things escalated. One evening, as the family sat around their dining table for dinner, both the husband and their son felt something drip onto their legs from the bottom of the table. The drops felt thick and warm, like blood. Alarmed, they looked down, expecting to see some kind of spill, but there was nothing—no liquid, no explanation. Confused, they shrugged it off, but this wasn’t the last time it would happen. The dripping sensation returned again and again, each time more unnerving than the last, and always with no visible cause.

But the most disturbing part of their experience was yet to come.

The family often spent their evenings in the living room, relaxing on the couch. At first, they didn’t notice it, but soon they began to feel an unsettling presence. The husband, in particular, felt as though someone was sitting beside him, despite the couch being empty. Every time he shifted, it was as if a weight moved with him, pressing down on the cushions. The sensation became so strong that it felt as if another person was silently sitting there, watching them.

It wasn’t long before the family started to piece things together. The man who sold them the furniture had seemed odd at the time of the sale, almost as if he were desperate to rid himself of the pieces. In hindsight, his strange demeanor and the eerily low prices made more sense. Had the furniture carried something with it—something the previous owner had wanted to escape?

They couldn’t help but wonder if the furniture was haunted. With each passing day, their anxiety grew. They began to feel like they were losing their minds, much like the man who had sold them the pieces. Desperate for peace, they made a vow: never again would they buy antique or used furniture.

That’s why they came to our store, so insistent on ensuring that every piece was brand new. They wanted to replace every single item in their home with fresh, untouched furniture—anything to rid themselves of the unexplained horrors they had endured.

As I was about to ask them more details, I was pulled away by another customer enquiring about something and they in the mean while, left the store. Never met them again and so it remained a mystery for me of what happened of that furniture.

Their story left a lasting impression on me. From that day forward, I made it a point to clearly communicate to every client that our store does not sell vintage pieces. Everything we offer is newly made, designed to evoke a sense of nostalgia,

without the risk of bringing unknown, potentially supernatural, elements into your home. Of course, this doesn’t mean that all antique furniture carries such risks, but it’s always better to know the source of the furniture you are buying.
